How to knit mittens – Free pattern for beginners

I created this free pattern for mittens for my charity knitting this year and I decided to publish it for anyone who is new to mittens. The mittens have a short cuff.

Free Pattern : Mittens

level: beginners

techniques: magic loop, knit, purl, ssk, k2tog, grafting (kitchener stitch), picking up stitches, kfb

yarn: Aran weight, 50% wool/50% acrylic, approximately 50 grams.

tools: 6 mm needles (US – 10, UK – 4) circular needles, tapestry needle, stitch markers

size: Lady’s S/M

gauge: 10 cm = 15 st, 10 cm= 16 rows (4 inch = 15 st, 4 inch = 16 rows) stockinette stitch

Library and Videos:

k = knit

p= purl

kfb= make one with knitting in the same stitch, first in the front leg, then in the back leg

ssk = slip, slip, knit

k2tog = knit 2 together

Cuff

Cast on with your preferable cast on 24 st. I use Long tail cast on.

Make your magic loop, divide in the middle, so you have 12 stitches on one needles, 12 stitches on the second needle. Be careful not to twist when joining the circle. Put a stitch marker on the first stitch.

Row 1: k1 (join the circle), p1 to the end of the row

Row 2: k1, p1 to the end of the row

Row 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10: k1, p1 to the end of the row

Hand part

Row 11: k1, kfb , k4, kfb, k3, kfb, k1, k1, kfb, k4, kfb, k3, kfb, k1 (15 st. on each needle, 30 st. at the end of the row)

Row 12: k to the end of the row

Row 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20: k to the end of the row

Right mitten: row 21: k2, k4 with scrap yarn , place back 4 on left needle , k4 (the scrap yarn stitches) with original yarn, k to the end of the row

Left mitten:   row 21: k9, k4 with scrap yarn , place back 4 on left needle , k4 (the scrap yarn stitches) with original yarn, k to the end of the row

Both mittens: row 22: k to the end of row

row 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39: k to the end of row

row 40: k1, ssk, k9, k2tog, k1, k1, ssk, k9, k2tog, k1 (13 st. on each needle, 26 at the end of the row)

row 41: k to the end of the row

row 42:k1, ssk, k7, k2tog, k1, k1, ssk, k7, k2tog, k1 (11 st on each needle, 22 at the end of the row)

row 43: k to the end of the row

row 44: k1. ssk, k5, k2tog, k1, k1, ssk, k5, k2tog, k1 (9 st on each needle, 18 at the end of the row)

row 45: k to the end of the row

row 46: k1, ssk, k3, k2tog, k1, k1, ssk, k3, k2tog, k1 (7 st on each needle, 14 at the end of the row)

row 47: k to the end of the row

Kitchener stitch the mittens

Thumb

Pick up stitches for the thumb – 5 on each needle, 10 for the row.

row 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9: k to the end of the row

row 10: ssk, k1, k2tog, ssk, k1, k2tog – 3 st on each needle, 6 at the end of the row

row 11: k to the end of the row

Kitchener stitch the thumbs.

Weave in all ends with your tapestry needle and enjoy your new mittens! 🙂
