Traditional crafts fest in Koprivshtitsa, Bulgaria

Traditional crafts fest in Koprivshtitsa, Bulgaria

During the last weekend of September, there was a traditional crafts fair in Koprivshtitsa. It is organized by the foundation that encourages people to work for the homeless and as I have been knitting for them for many years now, I decided to go and check out the fest and see my friends among the organizers.

Koprivshtitsa is a very small town in Bulgaria (population 2500) , about 70 km away from the capital Sofia. It is nested in the mountains and it is a prime example of Bulgarian National Revival architecture.   You can see this type of houses also in Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, Melnik, Bansko and probably other towns and cities that I have not yet visited.

The blue house is the home of one of the greatest Bulgarian symbolist poets – Dimcho Debelyanov. For Bulgaria’s symbolism he is the same as Paul Verlain is to the French (according to me :D). If you want to read some poems in English, you can read them here. We study a few of them at school.
Talking about school, we visited to local school museum, one part of which is a classroom from the 19th century, and the other part is some kind of a ethnographic museum.
Some pictures of my kiddo in the old classroom and then some pictures of the ethnographic part.

Knitted things that you can buy and the money goes to buy more yarn for the volunteers to knit for the homeless.
