The Tea and Honey Hat

What you’ll need

2 balls x 100 gr / 150 m (164 yds) Aran wool yarn or as suggested in the table:

Hooks

4.5 mm (7) crochet hook

6 mm (J/10) Tunisian crochet hook

Gauge

Worked in pattern & flat with the Tunisian crochet hook, after blocking:

10 cm x 10 cm / 4 in x 4 in = 15 sts x 13 rows

Size

3 sizes available – S, M, L.

Size S circumference is 44 cm (~17.5 inches)

Size M circumference is 50 cm (20 inches)

Size L circumference is 55 cm (22 inches)

Before you start

Please take a moment to give the entire pattern a read-through to understand the layout and flow of instructions. This hat is crocheted flat.

Abbreviations

ch – chain, ch 1 in the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch

retP –ch1, *yarn over and pull through two* until only one loop is left on the hook

scBL- single crochet in the back loop   

st/sts – stitches

tls – Tunisian last stitch

tss – Tunisian simple stitch

tss2tog – push hook through 2 tss, yarn over and pull through. 2 tss become 1 tss.

tps – Tunisian purl stitch

* – repeat

Construction

Ribbing

With colour A:

Row 1: Set up row. Start with smaller hook and chain 11 sts. In the second chain from the hook, sc to end of the chain. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 2: ch 1, 10 scBL, turn.

Repeat row 2 for 64 (72, 80) more times for a total of 66 (74, 82) rows.

Body

With colour B:

Row 1: On the wide side of the ribbing, with the Tunisian crochet hook, pick up and make 66 (74, 82) tss. RetP.

Row 2: *Tss, tps* until tls, work tls. RetP.

Row 3: *Tps, tss* until tls, work tls. RetP.

With colour A:

Row 4: *Tss, tps* until tls, work tls. RetP.

Row 5: *Tps, tss* until tls, work tls. RetP.

Size S: Repeat Rows 2, 3, 4 and 5 twice more for a total of 3 times. Finish on colour A, 6 stripes total.

Size M, L: Repeat Rows 2, 3, 4 and 5 twice more for a total of 3 times. Repeat rows 2 and 3 once more. Finish on colour B, 7 stripes total.

Crown:

With colour A:

Row 1: Tss until tls, work tls. RetP. 66 (74, 82)

Row 2: *2 Tss, tss2tog*, work tls. RetP. 50 (56, 62)

Row 3: Tss until tls, work tls. RetP.

Row 4: *Tss, tss2tog*, work tls. RetP. 34 (38, 42)

Row 5: Tss until tls, work tls. RetP.

Row 6: Tss2tog until tls, work tls. RetP.  18 (20, 22)

Bind off your stitches.

Finish:

Cut your yarn, leaving enough yarn to finish the hat. Align the stripes to match and use mattress stitch to sew the edges together with the tapestry needle. Close the crown with yarn and tapestry needle. Enjoy your new hat!
